Learn To Play A Brass Instrument, Absolutely Free!
It's never too late to pick up a brass instrument - and there's never been a better reason to start...
Whether you played a cornet years ago and always meant to go back, or you've wondered what it would feel like to pick up a tuba and make music with other people, Crediton Town Band wants to hear from you.
We're starting a free training band - open to players of all ages and abilities - for people in and around Crediton who want to learn to play a brass instrument or return to playing after a break. No experience necessary.
No cost. No pressure.

Why Brass? Why Now?
The research is compelling. Playing a brass instrument is genuinely good for you - and particularly so as you get older. Studies show that learning an instrument in later life is associated with improved memory, sharper thinking, reduced anxiety, better mental health and a significantly lower risk of dementia.
Brass instruments are rightly famous for their respiratory and cardiovascular benefits, as well as the multiple cognitive demands that make playing them such an effective workout for the brain.
And let’s be honest - playing music with other people is joyful. It gives you a reason to leave the house, a room full of people who are glad you came, and something to look forward to every week. For anyone approaching retirement, building some work-life balance, or simply looking for a new challenge or a new community, it can be genuinely life-changing.

What We Offer You...
Everyone in the band is passionate about playing brass, and we believe it’s something that should be accessible to everyone. So…
It's completely free. There are no lesson fees and no membership costs for training band players. Just come along and learn.
We can provide your instrument. If you don't already have your own, Crediton Town Band has a good stock of brass instruments ready to play. You don't need to buy anything to get started, and you can use our instruments for free.
You'll have expert guidance from the start. Our training band will be led by experienced players and teachers who are passionate about helping beginners and returners find their feet - and their sound.

You'll be part of something from day one. The training band will meet at Haywards Primary School every Thursday at 6pm, right before the main band rehearsal. Afterwards, you're welcome to stay and listen to the main band for as long as you’d like. We're one community, and you'll be part of it from the moment you walk through the door.
As your confidence and ability grow, you'll be invited to play with the main band, enjoying concerts, community events, and everything that makes being in a brass band so rewarding.

How It Works...
Each Thursday session will begin with a short period of sectional coaching - focused, friendly instruction on your instrument - before coming together as a training band to play and rehearse as a group. Main band members will regularly join in to support and encourage, and you'll quickly find yourself embedded in a warm and welcoming musical community.
You don't need to be able to read music to begin. You don't need to have played before. You just need to be curious.

A Place To Belong
Crediton Town Band has been part of this community for decades - playing at local events, raising money for charity, and bringing people together through music. The training band is the next step in our story, and we'd love you to be part of it.
If you've always wanted to learn, or you miss the playing you left behind, now is the perfect time to start. Crediton is a small town in Devon with a big musical heart - it’s time to come and find yours.
